CALIFONE bio:

Il "Califone" è un giradischi compatto fabbricato in America e giudicato indistruttibile anche in caso di violenta caduta al suolo. Venne infatti stipulata una convenzione con le scuole elementari americane affinchè i "Califone" venissero utilizzati dagli alunni nelle ore di educazione musicale, evitando così di dover ricomprare nuovi giradischi continuamente (vista l'imperizia dei bambini).
Nel giro di 5 anni i chicagoani Califone sono passati da band di nicchia a vero e proprio fenomeno indie di spessore internazionale, regolarmente in tour in America con gente del calibro di Wilco, Modest Mouse e Smog e realtà di punta della prestigiosa label Thrill Jockey (Tortoise, Giant Sand, Sea and Cake etc etc). I Califone raccolgono l'eredità dei Red Red Meat, gruppo che negli anni ’90, sotto contratto per la Sub Pop (l'etichetta dei Nirvana), ha centrifugato la tradizione folk e rock americana, passandola al filtro di ispirate manipolazioni elettroniche e di una spiazzante attitudine alla bassa fedeltà. La cifra stilistica dei Califone deve tanto alle dolenti ballate di Neil Young quanto alle stranezze di Captain Beefheart: umori malinconici e riflessivi si alternano a scintille improvvisative e a ruggiti blues. I numerosi lavori realizzati negli ultimi anni sono la testimonianza di una vena creativa inesauribile e di uno stato di grazia compositivo: Deceleration One e Deceleration Two, colonne sonore per film muti (“The Mascot” di L. Starewicz e “Salomè”, versione cinematografica del testo teatrale di Oscar Wilde), Roomsound (votato su Amazon migliore disco alternative del 2000), Quicksand/Cradlesnakes (piazzato dalla rivista "The Wire" tra i migliori dischi del 2003 nella sezione avant-rock), e Heron King Blues, pubblicato lo scorso anno e finito anch'esso nelle playlist di tante riviste specializzate, apprezzatissimo soprattutto per via di fughe tribali e percussive che precipitano l'ascoltatore in uno stato di quasi trance! Unici!

SETTLEFISH bio:

I SETTLEFISH sono Jonathan Clancy (voce, chitarra, synth), Emilio Torreggiani (chitarra), Bruno Germano (chitarra, farfisa, synth, voce), Phil Soldati (batteria, percussioni) e Paul Pieretto (basso, elettronica). La band vive a Bologna. Tutti i membri sono italiani tranne Jonathan che è nato in Canada. Dance A While,Upset è l'album di debutto della band su Deep Elm records (etichetta statunitense storica dell'indie e dell'emocore) ed è stato registrato nel mese di giugno 2002 da Danilo Silvestri, Bruno Germano e i Settlefish al Vacuum studio a Bologna. I Settlefish sono anche presenti sul capitolo 9 delle emo diaries, con la traccia "when the lights become green". La band tra marzo e aprile 2003 ha anche fatto parte del tour benefit "To young to die", organizzato in collaborazione di deep elm e della associazione americana contro il suicidio giovanile, suonando 31 show in america insieme ad altre band della label come brandtson , red animal war, david singer, e desert city soundtrack. Dopo pochi mesi si imbarcano in un altro tour lungo 5 settimane ,stavolta organizzato dagli amici di Alice Records. Suonano per tutto ottobre e parte di novembre 2003 in lungo e in largo per l'europa, toccando grandi città come Londra, Berlino, Monaco e condividendo il palco con grandi band eurpee, come Yage (ebullition rcds) e Logh (bad taste/deep elm), e altrettanto superbe band americane: Garrison (revelation records) e El Guapo (dischord records). I settlefish sono molto attivi anche in italia, hanno infatti suonato moltissime date soprattutto nel nord e nel centro della penisola. In Febbraio 2004 la band affronta un altro minitour insieme ai compagni di etichetta The Appleseed Cast (Tigerstyle/Deep Elm) in Svizzera ed Italia. In Maggio sempre dello stesso anno i Settlefish fanno un tour di due settimane da headliner in Inghilterra.
Nel frattempo esce uno split cd con i labelmate e amici desert city soundtrack e sounds like violence sempre su Deep Elm Records. Il nuovo full length registrato in Luglio 2004 allo studio Esagono di Rubiera (RE) vede la produzione di Brian Deck, noto per i suoi lavori per Califone, Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Atombombpocketknife e per essere stato il batterista dei Red Red Meat. Sul disco ci sono alcuni ospiti quali Jukka Reverberi (Giardini Di Mirò), lo stesso Brian Deck (Red Red Meat, Califone) e Ferruccio Quercetti e Carlo Masu (Cut). Il disco esce il 29 marzo per la bolognese unhip records.

THALIA ZEDEK bio:


Avendo suonato con gruppi importanti quali, tra gli altri, Come (con il vecchio compagno d'avventure Chris Brokaw), Live Skull e Uzi, Thalia Zedek può contare su una carriera di indiscusso valore nell'ambito della musica indipendente; una carriera iniziata negli anni Ottanta con la band tutta al femminile Dangerous Birds, il cui brano "Smile On Your Face" è stato incluso nella celeberrima compilation Sub Pop 100 del 1986.
Nel 2001, Thalia comincia un nuovo capitolo nella sua carriera pubblicando il suo primo lavoro solista dal titolo "Been Here And Gone" (Matador), acclamato dalla stampa specializzata americana ed europea.
L'anno successivo, Thalia, insieme a quella che a tutt'oggi è la sua band, pubblica "You're A Big Girl Now" per la Kimchee. Il gruppo è composto da Daniel Coughlin alla batteria e Dave Curry alla viola, musicisti che con grande maestria aggiungono pathos ed atmosfera alle ipnotiche note della chitarra e della voce di Thalia.
"Trust Not Those In Whom Without Some Touch Of Madness" è stato registrato da Howard Bilerman all'Hotel 2 Tango di Montreal, usando esclusivamente tecnologie analogiche.
Tra gli ospiti del disco troviamo Jonah Sacks (al violoncello in "Bone") e Harris Newman (lap steel in "Evil Hand").
Le canzoni di Thalia Zedek, intense e lunari come non mai, confermano il talento di una delle musiciste più quotate attualmente in circolazione, che ci regala il suo miglior album di sempre.

MOLASSES bio:

The earthy space rock outfit Molasses is yet another project to sprawl from the roots of Canadian art-rock moguls, Godspeed You Black Emperor. Built around songwriter Scott Chernoff, Molasses is comprised of a revolving set of musicians centered in Montreal, Quebec who Chernoff first gathered together in 2000 to record You'll Never Be Well No More. Molasses quickly followed this release up with Trilogie: Toil & Peaceful Life for their second release of 2000, then took some time off, presumably to focus on other projects as many members of the Molasses collective are involved with other ventures such as Fly Pan Am and the Boxhead Ensemble. In 2003, Chernoff again gathered his friends and put out Slow Messe and followed it in 2004 with Trouble at Jinx Hotel

Logh-bio:

Logh released their first album in January 2002. Three years, five European tours and 200+ shows later, they felt a strong urge to try something different for album No. 3.

So the band rehearsed for 6 months straight. Then, on September 26th 2004, they entered Studio Gröndahl in Stockholm, Sweden together with Pelle Gunnerfeldt (producer of The Hives, Sahara Hotnights etc) and in about ten hours (including a short lunch break) they recorded “A Sunset Panorama”! The entire event was filmed with five cameras and the music was mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround. The full multimedia experience, which is presented on a DVD that comes with the CD, gives the viewer/listener the impression of actually being with the band in the middle of the recording room.

Logh was formed in 1998. It took the members a good three years to assemble the different characteristics that would make up the band’s distinct sound. A sound which was, and still is today, based on minimalism and the idea of every note’s importance. Not a stroke too much. Or too little.

The first release to display this, the debut album “Every Time a Bell Rings, An Angel Gets His Wings” (Bad Taste Records, 2002), was awarded raving reviews throughout the world and laid the foundation for a wide-spread fan base, which made it possible for the band to tour Europe three times before starting to work on the second release.

Showing no signs of slowing down, the release of “The Raging Sun” (Bad Taste Records, 2003), took their music to a whole other level, presenting new ways into their universe, this time a seemingly dark one. The light was still there, but sparse and distributed over large volumes of dark, empty space. The darkness became so powerful that when it was time to move on, radical measures had to be taken to avoid being caught forever.

The memories of how the work on the third album began are fading fast and all physical evidence has been erased, but something made the band crawl up from their black hole and look towards the light. “A Sunset Panorama” is filled with withering memories. Memories of beautiful things. And memories of something going terribly wrong.
But these memories all seem to stem from a past that is unable to touch the present. This knowledge leaves the newly awoken invulnerable, as if carrying a get-out-of-jail free card, now ready to turn towards the light without fear of the dark catching up.

Il cantante/frontman degli storici Inspiral Carpets, gruppo che insieme con Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Charlatans ecc. infiammò la scena "Madchester" alla fine degli anni '80 e nei primi '90, sarà ad aprile in Italia per un tour solista.
Nei suoi concerti proporrà gli "anthems" degli Inspirals ("She comes in the Fall", "This is how it Feels", "Saturn 5", "Biggest Mountain" giusto per ricordarne alcuni), più brani tratti dai suoi due dischi solisti e dal repertorio dei Lovers (altro suo gruppo, formato insieme a due membri della prima formazione dei Fall).
Tra le altre cose, gli Inspiral Carpets si sono riformati nel 2003 e hanno fatto un lungo tour in UK con tutte date sold-out e picchi di 3.500 persone a concerto.

BEANS bio:

"Style is looking at fashion and ignoring it" -BEANS

Beans’ musical adventure spans back to his early days in suburban White Plains, New York. For him exposure to hip-hop back then, as for so many others, took the form of underground radio shows and mix tapes. A love affair was born.

Later involvement in the Brooklyn Boom poetic collective spawned ‘Anti-Pop Consortium’ where Beans joined forces with fellow emcees M Sayyid and High Priest. Long-term silent partner and production wizard Earl Blaze augmented and further strengthened the emcee trio.

Anti-Pop Consortium’s mission statement was to “disturb the equilibrium” in what they saw as an increasingly stagnant and creatively barren scene. The group’s lifespan ran from 1997 to 2002 - those five glorious years gave the world; ‘Tragic Epilogue’, ‘Ends Against The Middle’, and ‘Arrythmia’, along with several intense and powerful live shows. Their sound fused hip-hop with electro which when coupled with the three emcees’ spectacular wordplay gymnastics, won loyal fans across the globe. This unique musical vision helped pave the way for a whole movement of ‘alternative’ hip-hop that was quickly rising out of the boroughs of New York at the time. However, in 2002 A.P.C. imploded leaving Beans as a solo adventurer and free to become the director of his very own in flight space ship movie.

Still signed to Anti-Pop Consortium’s latter day home, the highly respected Warp Records, Beans presented his debut record ‘Tomorrow Right Now’ which marked his arrival as a solo artist in his own right. Soon after followed the ‘Now, Soon, Someday’ EP on which Beans teamed up with El-P and Prefuse 73 for some sonic alchemy. Live dates now saw Beans take to stage accompanied only by a mic and, for most of the show, a backing track. The minimal set-up further emphasised Beans’ vocal talents and ability to ride a rhythm either over one of his own beats or a cappella.

Beans has shown he’s here to stay and in it to win it. Showing no signs of standing still Beans now moves fearlessly on into 2004 with fresh material and more live dates planned…

To date, Beans has toured and shared stages with - Radiohead, Prefuse 73, Tortoise, El-P, Mike Ladd, DJ Krush, The Rapture, DJ Shadow, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, Attica Blues, Terranova, Jean Gray, Aceyalone, Missy Elliott – and had the pleasure of musical collaborations with - Bill Laswell, Pharoahe Monch, Prefuse 73, Vernon Reid, Funkstorung, Mike Ladd, Arto Lindsay, New Flesh For Old, Techno Animal, Matthew Shipp, DJ Spooky, Terranova, Aceyalone, DJ Shadow.

NIOBE bio:

Niobe is the brainchild of Yvonne Cornelius, and her debut, Radioersatz, was a mysterious and surreal journey full of peculiar sounds, colourful arrangements and unusual vocals. In addition to producing this music, Cornelius also performs all of the vocal tracks. Her vocals are often filtered, sounding as if they were recorded usingold or cheap microphones, and the words are often cryptic and defy easy interpretation, acting more as textures than as signs.

Her vocal style is built around "tongue sounds"; her voice wavers and quivers, contributing to an atmosphere of uneasy enchantment present throughout these songs. The instrumental arrangements, which open up in broad sweeps, are also inventive and unpredictable. Surprising sounds interrupt the flow of some unusual rhythms, synthesized, live or sampled instrumentation. From the rhythm of some very jolly bass bubbles in the first track to a mellow acoustic guitar loop in the closing number, Niobe takes you on a strange and dreamlike voyage with her unique and inventive sound.

Yvonne Cornelius was born in Frankfurt and has been living in Cologne since 1994. For over a decade she has developed a uniquely individual approach to electronic production, as well as a style of singing ranging from diva-esque acrobatics to comic excess. Concerts in Mexico City, at Berlin's Volksbuehne or the Batofar in Paris have already exposed her to an international audience.
